Animal Care Assistant in a Veterinary Centre (Animal Care Apprenticeship)

£3.30 per hour

The goal of the practice is to provide a caring and professional service for our clients, and maintain good quality of life for our patients for as long as possible.   However, veterinary practice is not for the fainthearted, it can be smelly, dirty and noisy at times.   We also have to deal with grieving owners and the death or euthanasia of our patients.

We are looking for someone wishing to pursue a career later on in veterinary nursing, although we do not offer nurse training positions.

We expect the candidate to have a professional appearance and work ethic.  GCSE Grade C in Maths and English or the equivalent are desirable.

The position will be full time, 40 hours per week, full training will be given on site by employer/Nescot.  The practice is a few minutes’ walk from Ashtead Station.

There would be paid annual leave for the pro rata equivalent of 20 days a year plus Bank Holidays.

General duties would include:

  • Helping our two vets and two qualified veterinary nurses to restrain patients for clinical examination, bandaging, suture removal, blood sample collection, setting up intravenous infusions and anaesthetic induction.
  • Cleaning surgical instruments, packing surgical kits to be autoclaved.
  • Washing bedding, surgical drapes, gowns and uniforms.
  • Handling of clinical waste.
  • Ensuring consulting rooms are kept clean and stocked with equipment, and assisting the receptionists in restocking the waiting room sales areas.
  • General cleaning and disinfection of premises, consulting rooms, cages, floors, reception area, litter trays and feeding bowls.
  • Feeding a range of pets and checking the water intake of each pet.
