Work Experience: Information for Employers

Information for employers – Work Experience:

We are looking for employers from a range of different industry sectors who can offer work experience opportunities to our students. By offering a placement, you will be supporting our students to become career-ready whilst also gaining many benefits:

  • Fresh perspectives and new ideas from our students
  • Opportunities for existing staff to supervise and mentor a young person
  • Extra resources for your everyday operations
  • Strengthen your recruitment pipeline

Work experience placements can vary from one week to 45 days depending on the requirements of the course. Typically, shorter placements focus on shadowing and awareness while longer placements are more outcome- focused with independent work. We have three different types of work experience placements at Nescot, all of which must be structured and supervised:

  • Work experience: Typically, a student will work with an employer for between one and two weeks. It normally involves a large amount of observation or ‘shadowing’, alongside assisting employers with day-to-day tasks and duties.
  • Work placements: These longer placements are required for some course qualifications, e.g.Health and Social Care, Early Years, Animal Care and Catering. Typically, between 100 - 300hrs are required and students submit evidence to confirm knowledge and understanding gained on placement.
  • Industry Placements: A key component of the Department for Education’s new technical route for 16 to 19 year-olds called T Levels. Students will complete a 315hr placement (typically 45-days), work towards a set of learning objectives, record experiences in a logbook and attend review meetings. To find out more, click here.
