Our Facilities
The department has three professional beauty therapy salons where you will use our professional facial, body and electrical equipment to treat members of the public.
We also have a new, purpose-built hairdressing salon where students learn cutting, styling and colouring before progressing to work experience with paying clients.
The department is also a licensed supplier of MATIS products.

- Course:
- Beauty Level 3
What made you decide to study Beauty at Nescot?
After my GCSEs a lot of people told me to do A-Levels but I knew I wanted to study Beauty. I’d done work experience at a salon and enjoyed it so much. I’m a people person and, as well as enjoying the work, I like the contact and the relationship you build with clients.
I did visit other colleges but chose Nescot because I liked the atmosphere. My brother went here and always said it was a really good college.
How has the college lived up to your expectations?
There’s always something going on here, in the canteen or around college. I remember one lunchtime they had a DJ in, which I really enjoyed. The college is easy to get around and people are friendly. Everyone smiles when they pass you in the corridor here.
I work in a salon part time and do a lot of dance, including regular shows at the Epsom Playhouse, so I don’t have as much time to spend around college this year. It is a lovely place to be though.
And your course?
Firstly, the tutors here are lovely people, really nice. You develop a good relationship with them. Last year, when something was bothering me my tutor actually noticed I’d been a bit quieter than usual and asked me if everything was alright. I had a good chat with her about what was on my mind. You can talk to the staff here about anything.
The course itself is great and I’ve enjoyed everything really, although it is more interesting this year as you have more skills so can do a lot more. The college also gets lots of specialists in to give training and talks. We had Fake Bake do a tanning demo and Steiner and Clarins doing talks and practical sessions.
The highlight for me has been the massage. There’s a lot of theory. You need to know all your anatomy before you can work on the muscles so there is a lot to learn. It’s so satisfying though, feeling the client relax and seeing how much they’re enjoying it.
How has your time at Nescot changed you?
I’ve grown up a lot because of the way you’re treated here. At college, if you don’t do something it’s your responsibility. They’ll explain how you’ll benefit if you do the work and give you all the help you need but it’s ultimately your choice. It’s a totally different environment to school and it makes you more focussed on what you need to do. I’ve learned a lot about how I want my working life to be.
We went on a salon trip to a very high end place a while ago and I realised it wasn’t the environment I would be happiest in. The salon I work in at the moment has a lot of regular clients and you build a very strong relationship with them over time. I’ve realised how important that is to me. This course does make you focus on your career a lot more.
What advice would you have for anyone thinking of doing your course?
Trust your gut instinct, I’m so happy I came to Nescot to do this and I knew it was right for me. Also, don’t just pick a course because you think you’ll get a job at the end of it. It’s so important to be learning something you enjoy. Education is not just about getting a job it’s about finding out about yourself.
What are your plans for the future?
When I’ve finished here I would like to go full-time at the salon I work in and see how far that will take me. I would like to have my own salon one day though. If I could do any job in the world I would like to fly planes I think that would be fantastic!
