Apprenticeships

Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as an apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds.

If you are keen to enter the world of work but don't want to stop studying then an Apprenticeship could be the answer. Apprenticeships offer a practical balance between learning a trade and earning a living.

Currently Nescot offers Apprenticeships in

  • Accountancy
  • Brickwork
  • Business Administration
  • Carpentry & Joinery
  • Childcare
  • Customer Service
  • Electrical
  • Gas
  • Hairdressing
  • Health & Social Care
  • Horticulture
  • IT
  • Management
  • Painting & Decorating
  • Plastering
  • Plumbing
  • Teaching & Learning in Schools
  • Team Leading

They enable you to start working and earn a decent wage whilst learning the skills and gaining the qualifications that employers want. All Apprenticeships lead to National Vocational Qualifications and Nescot's include:

  • Communication
  • Application of Number
  • Information Technology
  • Health & Safety
  • Efficient Working Practice

Pay can vary, but all employed apprentices must receive a minimum of £95 per week.

An Apprenticeship can also be a route into higher education for further qualifications. To find out more, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

You don't even have to stop once you've completed an Advanced Apprenticeship. You can go on to do a Foundation degree or HND.

The pace of progress will depend on you

An Apprenticeship does not last for a fixed length of time - it ends when all necessary elements have been completed.

Most Apprenticeships last between a minimum of one and three years and there are different types of Apprenticeships available.

The Apprenticeship which is right for you will depend on your experience and the opportunities in your area.

Funding your Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are fully funded for those aged 16 – 18 years. Employer contribution for those aged 19+. You will be asked to take an initial assessment to find out your basic skills levels and provide evidence of your GCSE qualifications.

Both you and your employer will receive structured support and advice from the Apprenticeship Team.

Painting & Decorating Level 2 Apprenticeship
Kelly Holden

Nescot gave me advice on how to find an Apprentice employer and I now work for Quality Decor, a painting and decorating firm that specialises in domestic, decorative and commercial decoration.  Since becoming an Apprentice I have gained lots of knowledge of painting and decorating and it has opened up a whole new world of experience.

I have enjoyed my apprenticeship so much.  Not a lot of people get the chance to work on the Shard in London, which will be the largest building in Western Europe.  Working with Quality Decor has given me the chance to travel and I have recently worked on a property in France.

The benefits of doing an Apprenticeship at Nescot is that you are working on-site most days, so you come across and learn how to deal with real life problems.  I am also learning lots on the business side of things.  After completing my Level 2 Apprenticeship I plan to do my Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship at Nescot and learn lots more about special decorating effects.
