Barbering: Intermediate Level Apprenticeship

An Apprenticeship in barbering will develop your skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of barbering related activities.  You will be working in a salon environment where your duties will include many areas of barbering such as communicating with colleagues and clients, dealing with customer enquiries and carrying out practical barbering tasks.  Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.

Barbering: Intermediate Level Apprenticeship

Course Details

To gain the full apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:
 Diploma in Barbering NVQ Level 2
 Functional Mathematics Level 1
 Functional English Level 1

The NVQ qualification is work- related and will relate specifically to your job role.

Course content includes
o Safe working practices
o Advise and consult with clients
o Shampoo condition and treat the hair and scalp
o Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
o Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
o Dry and finish men’s hair

Also Included:
o Change men’s hair colour
o Promote additional services or products to clients
o Fulfil salon duties
o Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work

Course Assessment:
You will be continually assessed throughout your training.  The assessments will take place in the workplace. You will also take examinations for functional skills (if required).  Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set, to ensure you complete your apprenticeship on time.

Employers will look for:
o Good communication skills
o Reliability, flexibility and good timekeeping
o Ability to work in a team as well as on your own initiative
o Enthusiastic and willing to learn

Entry Requirements

GCSE grades A*-C in English and Maths an advantage otherwise minimum Entry Level 3 at initial assessment in English and Maths are required.  You will need to demonstrate an interest in barbering. All applicants for apprenticeship training will be required to attend an interview and undertake initial assessments. You need to be employed for at least 30 hours per week including time spent at college.

On successful completion of this apprenticeship you could progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing or Barbering (NVQ 3).

Apprenticeships are fully funded for those aged 16 – 18 years.  There is an employer contribution for those aged 19+.
