Hairdressing: Level 3 VRQ Diploma

Course Summary

At Level 3 you will work on your creativity and confidence in order to deliver varied and advanced hairdressing techniques such as creative colouring, creative cutting and colour correction, in collaboration with Toni&Guy. You will work on real life clients, in both our training salons and in our commercial salon, Innovation, to put your new skills into action as you learn them.

Progressing Students

A Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing with the majority of grades at Merit or above, plus English and Maths and a satisfactory reference from your tutor for attitude, behaviour, attendance and punctuality. You will also be interviewed in the Spring Term by a member of the Hairdressing Team.

This is a chance to perfect your professionalism and learn new techniques needed in today’s industry; it is not for those wishing only to work on their Level 2 skills.

External students will be trade tested prior to entry.

A career in the hairdressing industry or further study in Hair and Media Makeup, Photography, or a Level 4 qualification in Salon Management. After time in the industry, being qualified to Level 3 would enable you to gain qualifications in assessing and teaching.

Please note:

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not charged course fees.

Students are encouraged to think independently and creatively during the course, and stay up to date with the latest fashions and trends.

Nescot’s Hair & Beauty Academy has been through some exciting recent changes. We have completely refurbished the training salons and theory room and are now delighted to have a state of the art, commercial salon in partnership with Toni & Guy on site. All of our team are excellent teachers as well as senior-level hairdressers and beauty therapists with outstanding industry experience.

Units you will complete:

  • Cut hair using a combination of techniques
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair
  • Hairdressing consultation services
  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Hair colour correction services
  • Creative hair design skills
  • Cutting men’s hair


Timetable and assessment

  • Theory lessons and practical lessons
  • A work placement to gain industry knowledge
  • Weekly tutorial support to continue to develop your employability skills
  • English and maths lessons if you have not achieved a 4 at GCSE, which are a compulsory element in achieving your diploma.

A work placements is part of this course. You are required to undertake work experience of approximately 50 hours with an external employer relevant to the course you are studying. 
You will be encouraged to source your own placement with support from the work placement team and your tutor. Work placements often lead onto offer of an apprenticeship or paid employment once you have completed your course.
