Print Share Ask a questionThe travel and tourism industry is one of the world’s largest and most dynamic industries, it is also one of the largest employment sectors and is continually growing and developing. The travel industry is so diversified that it contains a range of jobs from holiday reps to tour guides both in the UK and worldwide.
New Students
Four GCSEs at Grade 4 including English and Maths*.
Students who have fulfilled the four GCSE Grade 4 entry requirement but who need to resit maths may be offered a Diploma route.
*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.
Progressing Students
A Level 2 Diploma at Merit plus English and Maths, plus a good reference from your current tutor for attitude, behaviour, attendance and punctuality.
Successful students may wish to progress into Higher Education. Others may choose to go directly into employment with tour operators, airlines, travel agencies, passenger transport operators, or visitor attractions.
Potential career routes in the Travel and Tourism industry:

You will be provided with all the basic resources and materials needed for your programme. Some additional fees are required to cover the cost of trips to international destinations and activities required to participate in to gain the criteria to pass this course. Costs approximately - £450 per year.
Completing an extended diploma in travel and tourism will give you the opportunity to be part of this industry and progress quickly in your chosen profession. Being taught by lecturers with real industry experience ensures that the teaching is up to date giving you the best chance of succeeding on the course and therefore giving you the best chance to succeed in your chosen profession.
The course is designed using a range of teaching methods making it as fun and practical as possible, giving everyone the opportunity to succeed and reach their potential. Combining these elements together with the trips abroad - with previous destinations, being Rome, Paris, Barcelona and Lanzarote - as well as trips to more local UK destinations such as London and Brighton, we believe that learning from experience gives you the best chance of success.
In addition to the main course, all students will take on additional courses. NCFE Resort Reps is taken in the first year and NCFE Cabin Crew or Aviation on the Ground in year two, all of which are successful industry qualifications and give the students that all important help with the first step on the career ladder.
The travel department is very proud of the facilities that it has to offer and especially the cabin crew training room that was installed last year giving our students a real feel for the duties and roles of being a Cabin Crew member. This combined with the annual trip to Virgin Atlantic or British Airways to be put through some of the training required of cabin crew gives a taste of what it is like to work for one of the world’s prestigious companies.

Work Experience is a part of this course, the hours and dates will be determined by the course tutor. Work experience can be up to a maximum of two weeks on an external placement, you are encouraged to source your own placement with support from the WEX Team and your course tutor. Where external placements are not possible you will be expected to take part in simulated work experience organised by the college.
