Sponsored Dig – Hard work raises £100 for Haiti

Nescot students wanted to do something to raise money for Haiti, after the terrible devastation caused by the recent earthquake in the Port-au-Prince area. Students and staff had the idea for a sponsored dig, which involved cultivating a section of the Nescot vegetable plot for a whole hour without stopping.

Despite the rain, cold and a little moaning the students and staff all managed successfully to dig non stop for an hour. Nescot lecturer, Caroline Knight, coordinated the dig and said how well the students worked and that it was a great team effort! The students discovered that digging for an hour wasn’t as easy as they had thought, they were also hindered by the cold and wet weather conditions.

Thanks to the sponsored dig, coffee morning and other fundraising events, Nescot has now raised a combined £391 for Concern Worldwide charity group. Concern Worldwide is an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to reducing suffering and ending extreme poverty. Since their beginning, over 40 years ago, the focus has been on improving the lives of the poorest people. Concern has been working in Haiti since 1994 and this experience puts them in a position to provide a really effective response. They are on the ground helping people in the affected area, providing emergency care in the aftermath of this terrible tragedy.
