Elderly Cheered by Free Beauty Treats

Nescot College Beauty students visited the Cheam Priory Day Centre in Cheam last month to provide free pampering sessions for the elderly local residents who visit the centre.

The visit was devised and carried out by Nescot’s third-year NVQ beauty students as part of a project to reach out to the local community and raise awareness of the college’s on-site beauty and hairdressing treatment rooms.

As well as giving manicures and massages to the day centre members, students held a free raffle for beauty products, with a top prize of an intensive treatment and hairdressing appointment at Nescot’s Beauty clinic. Each member also received a Christmas card with money-off vouchers for themselves, their families and friends.

‘It was a really successful trip,’ said group tutor Natalie Watkins.

‘It was my first experience of taking a class out so I was a little apprehensive at first, I knew they were a great group but I was not sure how they would manage with delivering treatments to the elderly centre users, some of whom may have quite challenging behaviour.

‘The girls coped admirably I’m very proud of them and keen to do more.’

The vouchers handed out at the event have already resulted in an increase in inquiries and bookings for Beauty and Hair appointments at the college and the learners were surprised at how much they enjoyed the day.

‘It was really nice to meet the ladies at the centre. They liked having their nails done the most. Quite a few of them said they couldn’t manage to do it themselves any more so it was a special treat. I’d love to do it again,’ said Sidonie Fowler, 19, from Croydon.

Staff and residents at the day centre were equally pleased with the visit. Julie Evans, Carer-Driver at the centre described how the attention and pampering had made a difference to her charges.

‘Oh it was wonderful, they all really enjoyed it and, after they went home we got calls from their families saying how much it had perked them up,’ she said, ‘The girls were really friendly and polite, they even did my nails,’ she added, ‘We would love it if they came back again.’
