Nescot Student wins top apprentice at Surrey County Awards

Nescot College Plumbing Apprentice, Alex Burns saw his ingenuity and hard work recognised on Monday 5 September when he was awarded the John Coleman Trophy for overall winning apprentice at the Surrey County Scholars and Apprentices Awards at County Hall in Kingston-upon-Thames.

A further ten students received Surrey County Apprentice Awards in recognition of their hard work and outstanding achievements, including fellow Nescot apprentices Chris Miller, who works for Sutton and Surrey Water Ltd, and Joe Sheridan, who works for Abacain Ltd.

For Alex, who works for Hollands Heating and Plumbing, and has overcome significant obstacles in his determination to pursue his chosen route to success, the award was confirmation of the benefit of hard work and initiative.

Both Alex and Chris told the audience at County Hall how wonderful it was to receive the awards, presented by Mrs Sarah Goad, JP, Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, and Mr Tim Wates, Director of Wates Group, and how they hoped that it would help them with their future careers.

In addition seven Diploma students from the four Surrey colleges received awards recognising their achievements with money, certificates and trophies which it is hoped will help them find employment. This has been accomplished through generous funding from the Wates Group.

Cllr Peter Martin, Cabinet Member for Children and Learning, Surrey County Council, welcomed the guests to County Hall and praised the awards organiser SATRO, a charity which brings together educational establishments and business, for the work it does to encourage young people to achieve their full potential in life.

Dr Beccy Bowden, CEO of awards organiser SATRO, said ‘We have heard so much in recent months, following the riots, lamenting the state of today’s youth, the students receiving these awards are a fantastic example of what our young people can achieve and we should all be extremely proud of them.’
