Halloween comes to Nescot’s LRC

Nescot’s LRC took on a distinctly spooky feel in the last week of October as students from the college’s Preparation for Life and Work (PFLAW) department created a fantastic display to showcase Halloween-themed materials available for students to enjoy.

The display was presided over by a seven foot scarecrow, created by the students as part of their work for the Ardingly Summer Show. The scarecrow, dubbed Despot by the staff and students, was joined by intricately carved pumpkins and posters created by the team.

‘I wanted to bring the students attention to some of the things available in the LRC and encourage those who don’t really read much by showing that there are materials suitable for everyone here,’ said LRC Manager Graeme Hodge.

‘I asked PFLAW to get involved and they came up with this wonderful display. We also baked and decorated spooky cupcakes to sell for Children in Need so it’s been very successful,’ he said.

For PFLAW students Letitia, 16, from Sutton, Matthew, 18 from Epsom and Katrina, 16, from Mitcham the chance to take inspiration from LRC books had led to some eye-catching artwork to support the display.

‘We liked the painting and drawing best and are really pleased with the posters and the ghosts we made,’ they agreed before explaining that, while some found reading tough, the books in the library had certainly led to interesting poster ideas.

‘We should do this every year,’ they said.
