Nescot Media students win Gold for a second year running!

Congratulations to the two groups of Nescot Media students who won Gold and Bronze medals at this year’s WorldSkills UK Finals held in Birmingham at the NEC last week (15 – 17 November).

The competitions were part of The Skills Show, which honours the most talented apprentices, students and employers.  Over 500 entrants took part in 61 WorldSkills UK National Competitions in skills ranging from Aeronautical Engineering to Landscape Gardening.  Competitors secured their places in the finals after winning regional heats, which took place throughout the UK earlier this year.  The competitors battled it out to win Gold, Silver and Bronze and ultimately be named the ‘best of the best’ in the UK at their chosen skill. TV presenter Angelica Bell was on stage to hand out the medals to the winners.

The Nescot Media students won the Moving Image category, which required them to produce news coverage of  the three days of The Skills Show.  They were  required to produce a four minute news package each day, researching stories, filming the event and finding appropriate guests to interview, before heading back to cut the package together by 5pm.

This is the second year running that Nescot Media students have taken Gold at the UK Finals, and Craig Catlow, Head of Department for Creative Media at Nescot said: “we are very proud of our learners as they excelled themselves; the winning team were streets ahead of the competition according to the judges, who said that the professional manner in which they worked was remarkable for people of their age.

It was an extremely tough competition in a very busy environment. Special thanks need to go to all of the media team that worked with the groups before and during the event, with particular mention to Carlo Ortu and Graham Chalk who both made sure that the teams were more than ready for the event and motivated our students to push themselves.

Theo Paphitis, Patron of the Skills Show, said: "Congratulations to the winners of this year's WorldSkills UK National Competition Finals. There has been some fantastic work produced and I hope this will show everyone how Apprenticeships and vocational training can lead to worthwhile and valuable careers."
