The Performing Arts student who won the department’s Monologue Slam contest in December has been signed to an agency.
HND student Aaron George Stephens, in his fourth year at Nescot, will be represented by Abacus Agency, a Redhill-based organisation with clients including Shona McGarty, who plays Witney Dean in EastEnders and William Melling, who plays Nigel in the Harry Potter films.
Aaron, 20, is hoping to top up his HND to a degree with a year studying at drama school while working for the agency.
“Abacus is a great agency and this is an amazing opportunity for me, but I’m not taking it for granted and I just want to work as hard as I can,” he said.
The Monologue Slam was held at Nescot on December 11 and organised by UpStageRight, the Performing Arts department’s theatre company.
A judging panel comprising drama school directors and casting agency representatives then selected the top three performances, with Abacus Agency approaching Aaron after his performance of an extract from Simon Stephens’ Motortown.
Aaron, who achieved triple Distinction grades in his two-year Level 3 course at Nescot before progressing onto the college’s HNC and HND, said course leader Gavin Maxwell had suggested he take part in the competition and recommended the monologue he performed.
“I messed up my performance in the rehearsal and it was only about an hour before the slam started and I got so nervous,” he said.
“All the teaching staff were so supportive, I’m not sure if I could even have got through the competition without them.
“That’s one of the best things about the Performing Arts department – all the staff really care about the students and about us doing the best that we can, and they will go the extra mile for all of us.”
