Nescot's Got Talent 2014 raises £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust

Business students have raised more than £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust by holding a talent show.

Nescot’s Got Talent, held in the college theatre on November 6, was organised by the Level 3 group as part of their Managing a Business unit for the second consecutive year.

The students are now finishing their module, but have planned even more events to increase their fundraising total for the cancer charity to more than £1,000.

"We’re really pleased with the money we’ve already raised, but it’s such a good cause we wanted to do more to help," said Sienna Roye, who presented Nescot’s Got Talent with Thomas Dervish.

"So far our ideas include a Christmas cake sale, another raffle and a sponsored walk. Everyone is affected by cancer, so the more we can raise the better."

This year the audience voted for the winners, with Music Practice student Charlotte Turnbull coming in first place, Computing student Martin Bell in second and tutor Josh Harris in third place.

The students planned, organised, promoted and ran open auditions and the show itself, with tasks on the day ranging from presenting to doing the sound and lighting.

In addition, they held cake sales, a five-a-side football tournament and a raffle, with the winning numbers drawn at the finals of Nescot’s Got Talent.

Deputy Principal Carol Martin, who watched the show with Vice Principal Fred Carter, said: "It was a great competition – the Business students worked really hard, the standard of performers was high and the audience supported all the competitors."

Business student Oliver Swann-Wright, who led the project, added: "It’s been a really tough unit, but it’s been a great experience and we learnt a lot in the planning and during the show.

"We learnt how important preparation and planning is to a live event, how you have to prepare for the unexpected, and how to work together as a team and communicate well."
