Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care: Level 2 (Distance Learning)

You do not need to have any formal qualifications in order to follow this course, but you will need to demonstrate commitment and motivation to work through the specially prepared distance-learning materials.

The qualification aims to provide a sound preparation for further study and access to a range of vocational qualifications, including Apprenticeships and Diplomas in Health and Social Care.

This course is appropriate for a wide range of learners. It has particular relevance to the professional development of those who are entering the field of health or social care in the public, private or voluntary sectors for the first time. The qualification is applicable to a range of care settings and roles, and will be ideal for support workers, domiciliary and residential care workers, health care assistants and unpaid and voluntary carers.

The course has a credit value of 20 on the Qualifications Credit Framework.

The course will cover the following areas and consists of three workbooks and assessments:

• Workbook 1: Understanding the role of the social care worker. Principles of personal development in adult social care setting. Understanding person-centred approaches in adult social care settings.
• Workbook 2: Principles of diversity, equality and inclusion in adult social care settings. Principles of communication in adult social care settings. Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care. Principles for implementing adult care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings.
• Workbook 3: Understanding how to handle information in social care settings. Understanding health and safety in social care settings.

Assessment

Candidates work through the course materials for the programme at times convenient to them, so there is no need to attend the college to gain the qualification. The learning materials contain the knowledge needed to meet the assessment requirements of the course and activities to allow candidates to practice their skills and test their learning. Assessments are based on a combination of knowledge and skills learned on the programme and work-based activities and experience. Learners should complete the course within 16 weeks.
