Course Summary

This course will provide a learner with knowledge and understanding to help prepare or care for an individual with learning disabilities and difficulties. It will be highly valuable to people who support those with learning disabilities, in a personal or professional capacity.

You do not need to have any formal qualifications in order to follow this course, but you will need to demonstrate commitment and motivation to work through the specially prepared distance-learning materials.

The qualification aims to provide a sound preparation for further study and access to a range of vocational qualifications including Diplomas in Health and Social Care.

This qualification provides the learner with knowledge and understanding to help prepare or care for an individual with learning disabilities and difficulties. The programme is designed to provide an understanding of principles required to ensure that an individual with learning disabilities is provided with high quality, person centred care. It also covers topics on safeguarding and positive risk taking.

The course will cover the following areas and consists of three modules:

  • Module A: Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities. Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care.
  • Module B: Introduction to personalisation in social care. Principles of positive risk-taking for individuals with disabilities.
  • Module C: Introductory awareness of autistic spectrum conditions. Principles of supporting Individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare.

The course has a credit value of 17 on the Qualifications Credit Framework.

Assessment

Candidates work through the course materials for the programme at times convenient to them, so there is no need to attend the college to gain the qualification. The learning materials contain the knowledge needed to meet the assessment requirements of the course and activities to allow candidates to practice their skills and test their learning. Assessments are based on a combination of knowledge and skills learned on the programme and work-based activities and experience. Learners should aim to complete the course within 12 weeks.
