This course is for adult students aged 18+. GCSE English Language is a basic qualification for a broad variety of careers, in order to access most degree-level courses, and it is also useful for those returning to education.

Course Detail

This one year programme commencing in September is open to anyone aged 18+ who does not already have a GCSE grade C or above in English. All applicants will be required to produce evidence of qualifications but the course is also open to mature students with no formal qualifications. No tuition fees are payable. However, acceptance on to this course is subject to initial assessment tasks and an interview.

You will study for three hours per week either during the evening or afternoon. There are many practical activities and you will write for a variety of purposes. You will also read a range of texts, learning to analyse them in a logical and methodical way. In addition, you will undertake a series of speaking and listening tasks designed to improve your communication skills in situations such as job interviews and individual presentations.

What are the aims of the GCSE English Language course?

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  • Read, understand and respond to various types of writing
  • Follow an argument and understand how writers use language to achieve effects
  • Organise your ideas and to communicate clearly through writing
  • Write in a variety of styles for a variety of purposes
  • Use of correct grammar and Standard English in appropriate contexts
  • Effective communication through speaking and listening
  • Use accurate spelling and punctuation

What else do I need to consider?

Learners are reminded that this is an academic course and you must allow time for private study and home assignments in addition to evening classes. Learners must attend for a minimum of 90% to complete the course successfully.

Entry Requirements

To gain entry on to the course, applicants will need to sit an Initial assessment and achieve a Level 1 or above. Alternatively, applicants who have very recently achieved a grade 3 at GCSE Maths or a Level 1 or above in Functional Skills can gain direct entry.
