Are you interested in studying art and design but do not have a qualification in it or would like to develop your knowledge and skill?

If so this is the course for you, this is a practical hands-on course which provides a foundation in art and design techniques.

Course Detail

Students will explore Art and Design through a range of projects including sculpture, drawing, textiles, printmaking and mixed media taught by subject specialists in our specialist Art studios. Students are encouraged to explore their own creativity and individuality in a supportive environment which helps to build self confidence.

Work Experience is a part of this course, the hours and dates will be determined by the course tutor. Work experience can be up to a maximum of two weeks on an external placement, you are encouraged to source your own placement with support from the WEX Team and your course tutor. Where external placements are not possible you will be expected to take part in simulated work experience organised by the college.

Course Fees

Fees for 2022/23: £3,150

Please note:

  • Fees are for 2022/23 and relate to home and EU students
  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged for course fees

You will also incur the following costs, estimated below for 2022/23:

  • A sketchbook and materials - about £50
  • Project materials - about £30
  • Admission to two art galleries per term - about £60 for admission, plus travel.
Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above - It is not a requirement to have studied Art and Design or an Art and Design related subject before (Textiles / Graphics / Photography).

Following your interview you will also be required to submit a Digital Portfolio:

  • 10-15 examples of work sent as a PowerPoint or PDF – examples of work should include photographs of sketchbook pages / finished pieces of work / artwork completed in own time.

Students can progress on to the Level 2 Art and Design course when they have satisfactorily completed the Level 1 Diploma.
