I didn’t know what to do when I finished school, but when I came to Nescot’s open evening and met the tutors in the Beauty department I knew it was the right choice for me. I’ve really enjoyed Level 2. When we learn a new treatment we always learn the theory first, and then we practise on each other and give feedback. Being able to experience it as a client helps you to improve your own technique, so it’s a good way to learn.

The best thing about the course is the variety – we do everything from stage makeup to using prosthetics to create special effects. It means I’m versatile as an artist, and it has also helped me to make an informed choice on what to do next. I’m going to university to study prosthetics and special effects, and I know that what I’ve learnt at Nescot has put me in a really good position.

The way we learn is really practical and hands-on. We learn the theory, watch a demonstration, and then do it for ourselves – and then practise until we’re confident. We have a lot of autonomy in the lessons, which I really like. The teachers trust us to work independently, but they give us lots of feedback. It’s good preparation for working in a salon.

At the moment we’re working on hair and makeup looks inspired by the 1980s, and body art inspired by Picasso. The body art is hard because you have to be really precise with the paint. My techniques have got much better since I started the course, and I feel much more confident.
