Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-Up: Level 3

Course Summary

The Level 3 Diploma provides you with the specialist practical skills and knowledge which will equip you to seek employment within the theatrical and media make-up industry. A Level 2 Diploma or Technical Certificate in Hair and Media Make-Up is required to enable you to progress on to this Level 3 course.

Level 2 in Hair and Media Make up (either the L2 Technical or Merits at VRQ or equivalent) plus a grade 4 in English. A satisfactory reference for attitude, behaviour, attendance and punctuality.

You can progress on to a HNC/HND in media and special effects make up, or work in the media and theatrical industries.

Fees for 2023/24: £3,295

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not charged course fees.

Students will be required to buy a uniform, and a make-up and media make-up kit and hairdressing kit, which costs approximately £520.

Mandatory modules which you will study include:

  • Working in the beauty related industry
  • Health and safety
  • Creative hairdressing design skills
  • Face and body art
  • Fashion and photographic make-up
  • Applying airbrush make-up
  • Media make-up
  • Camouflage make-up
  • Style and fit postiche
  • Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps


Assessment

Online exams for each unit. Practical assessments throughout for 8/10 units. You will have to create mood boards as part of a portfolio and final assessments have to be done on a model.

Work experience is part of the course and will be approximately 40 hours over the academic year. Work experience is a mandatory part of your course and as such students may be expected to work some weekends and/or evenings to fulfil this.
