Information Communication Technician Apprenticeship Level 3

Course Summary

The Information Communication Technician delivers efficient operation and control of the IT and/or Telecommunications infrastructure either on-site or remotely to help deliver and support the information systems needs of an organisation.

From September 2023, this apprenticeship will be delivered at Nescot as part of the Sussex and Surrey Institute of Technology

These will be determined and agreed between the employer and Nescot. However, it is likely to include five GCSEs grade 4 or above (especially in English, Maths and a Science or Technology subject) a Level 2 apprenticeship or other relevant qualification/s and experience, or an aptitude test with a focus on IT skills.

You will need to have achieved GCSEs at grade 9 - 4 (or comparable qualification) in English and maths. Please note, you will also be required to undertake an initial assessment prior to enrolment in order to assess your current level of English and maths. Your interviewer will discuss with you what minimum level you will need to achieve at initial assessment.

Whilst your technical skills and knowledge will develop over the course of your Apprenticeship you will also need to demonstrate to potential employers that you possess the relevant skills and personal qualities and are willing to work and learn.

To begin this course you must be eligible to work within England or the European Economic Area (EEC) and be employed for a minimum of 30 hours in a relevant job role and be able to attend college on a part-time basis. Your employer must commit to supporting you throughout your apprenticeship and provide on-the-job learning as well as your college based off-the-job learning.


If you do not have an employer to support your apprenticeship the college will support you to find an employer through our dedicated employer support team.

Please note, you may also be required to undertake an initial assessment prior to enrolment in order to assess your current level of English and Maths. Your interviewer will discuss with you want minimum level you will need to achieve at initial assessment.

A 5% employer contribution fee may be applicable depending on the age of the apprentice and the size of your organisation.

The Information Communication Technician helps organisations to prepare for new or changed services operating throughout the change process helping with the maintenance of regulatory, legal, and professional standards in the delivery of systems. A key part of their role is monitoring the performance of systems and services in relation to their contribution to business performance, system security and sustainability.

The Information Communication Technician occupation delivers efficient operation and control of the IT and/or Telecommunications infrastructure. This core duties of this role include:

  • Providing technical support to customers both internal and external through a range of communication channels
  • Establishing and diagnosing ICT problems/faults using the required troubleshooting methodology and tools
  • Applying appropriate testing methodologies and processes to resolve ICT technical issues
  • Installing and configuring software and hardware


Specialisms

The Information Communications Technician is a core and options standard. The scope of work for an ICT is broad, so separate apprenticeship routes have been created. All apprentices must take the assessment of the core content and then either the support technician option content and/or the network technician option content.

Support Technician
Desk-based, a Support Technician both monitors systems and receives helpdesk enquiries. They could be supporting general infrastructure or specialist systems. A Support Technician understands priorities and is able to escalate to specialist engineering when required.

  • Support general infrastructure or specialist systems
  • Problem solving and maintenance or repair of system faults
  • Administer security access requirements and permissions for stakeholders escalating as necessary for example password resets

Network Technician
Usually desk-based, a Network Technician is focused on monitoring and maintaining network performance. The role may require field work to implement both physical and cloud-based networks.

  • Complete cabling tasks for example coaxial, copper, fibre or remotely
  • Administer mobile devices on a network
  • Deliver network tasks prioritising security with a view to mitigating and defending against security risks
