UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production

Course Summary

Want to work in the music industry? Would you like to be a live performer, sound engineer, beats producer, DJ or record label owner? Nescot have a selection of courses to help you achieve your dreams. On the Level 3 Music Technology course you will be taught by lecturers with deep music business experience, a wealth of hands on knowledge and wide-ranging contacts within the industry.

New Students

4 GCSE’s at Grade 4 or above including English*.

*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.

Progressing Students

A Level 2 Diploma (at least a Merit) with a good reference for attitude, behavior, attendance and punctuality.


You may want to progress to a specialist Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music or Media if you get Merit grade at the end of this qualification. Alternatively, you may progress into work, such as in music shops, or seek work as a music performer, session player, or in the recording industry.

A range of visits will be arranged and will cost in total for the year about £460.

On this Level 3 UAL course, you will develop advanced skills in:

  • Electronic Music Production – Enhancing techniques for creating, arranging, and producing music digitally.
  • Software Skills – Mastering industry-standard software for music production and media.
  • DJing – Refining mixing techniques and live performance skills.
  • Listening Skills – Developing critical listening abilities to analyse music, sound design, and audio production.
  • Music Research Project – Exploring historical and contemporary contexts in music production.
  • Live Performances – Gaining experience in performing music in a live setting.
  • Studio Sessions – Learning professional studio recording, mixing, and production techniques.

Throughout the course, you will also build essential communication, literacy, and numeracy skills, which are vital for success in the creative industries.

Teaching and Industry Experience

At NESCOT, our tutors have extensive industry experience, ensuring that your learning is practical, relevant, and up to date. Guest lecturers from media and music industries, including producers, DJs, and sound designers, provide valuable insights into real-world creative careers.

We run trips throughout the year, attending the Ditto music conference, various exhibitions and live performances.

Student Success and Progression

We encourage students to participate in competitions and work experience opportunities to enhance their skills and confidence. Many of our students progress to higher levels of study, including university courses or other creative pathways at top institutions. We also offer a Level 4 here at NESCOT which many students choose to progress to, which can then be put towards a University application.

Assessment

Your progress will be assessed through coursework, with grades awarded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction for Unit 8 and Unit 13, which are the Final Major Projects. Units 1-11 are assessed on a Pass or Fail basis.

Work Experience

Work experience in the first year is an important part of this course. You will have the opportunity to gain up to two weeks of work placement, working with a client through simulated projects within the college. Support will be provided throughout.
