One-year full time course comprising of 12 hours per week for 30 weeks in addition to 100 hours of teaching practice.
Course runs Thursday 10.00 am to 4.45 pm, and Friday 10.00 am to 3.30 pm from September to May.
The Cert Ed incorporates the LSIS mandatory modules for teaching qualifications, Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers and additional modules to support trainees' subject specialism.
The Cert Ed requires 100 hours of mandatory teaching practice during the period of training, 8 of which will be observed. Nescot will help to provide teaching practice placements for full time applicants.
Placement places are limited and are allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
The course includes both formative or practice assessment and formal summative assessments. The purpose of a formative assessment is to develop and test your understanding in the subject area. Formative assessments do not count towards your final module mark but your course team will give you feedback to help you improve. Formal or summative assessments normally count towards your module/unit mark and therefore towards your final award (i.e. class of degree, distinction/merit/pass). Assessment methods may include written examinations, and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and often a major project or dissertation in the final year.
Teacher Trainees without a portable DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check are required to undergo a DBS. A charge of £52.00 is levied at enrolment. Full time students are able to add the costs of the DBS to their student maintenance loan.
Students are required to hold at least grade 4 or equivalent in English and Maths at GCSE and a HNC, HND, or Level 3 in their subject specialism.
This award will fully qualify trainees to teach in the Further Education and Adult Education and Training Sectors.
