Foundation Learning students raise £100 for Children in Need

Foundation Learning students have already raised more than £100 for Children in Need this week through their morning café.

Students on the Further Education Pathway programme made cakes including brownies, Victoria sponge, chocolate cake and coffee sponge, and sold them in Seasons Café on Wednesday.

The students also served tea, coffee and hot chocolate, and organised a tombola with prizes donated by staff.

“The students got lots of catering experience by making the cakes, and they’ve learnt lots of useful skills like handling money and dealing with customers,” said Foundation Learning lecturer Juliette Sims.

“They have really enjoyed what they’ve been doing so far, and hopefully we will raise even more money for Children in Need over the course of the week.”

Jacob, who joined Nescot from Cheam High School, was in charge of running the tombola, and said tickets had proved popular.

“I have enjoyed selling tickets and counting the money and giving the right change,” he said. “I like doing the café, and it’s good that we’re donating the money to charity.”

Jacob said he chose to study at Nescot because he was so impressed by the Foundation Learning department’s staff and facilities.

“All the teachers are really nice, and they always help you a lot with what you need,” he added. “We learn lots of skills that we’ll need in the future when we get a job, and that makes me more confident.”

Foundation Learning offers programmes aimed at students with learning difficulties or disabilities, as well as courses for young people who left school with few formal qualifications.
