Our next Open Evening is on Thursday 15 May.
Nescot’s second year Carpentry and Joinery full-time students and apprentices benefitted from an insightful two-day masterclass from roof window manufacturer, VELUX, this week (01 and 02 April).
Jamie Palmer-House, technical trainer from the VELUX Training Academy hosted the sessions in our Carpentry workshop where he spoke about VELUX and its products, explained installation procedures and the design and testing process including the famous wind tunnel. The sessions also focussed on best practice, highlighting good and poor installations.
Jamie also set up two roofing training rigs to demonstrate the installation of both, centre pivot and top-hung VELUX windows and to highlight the pros and cons of each. The students and apprentices also had the opportunity to fit the window frames, the thermal and weathering collars, flashings and the sashes. Students and apprentices that successfully participated were given a free £50 installation tool courtesy of VELUX.
The sessions concluded with Jamie demonstrating the solar powered upgrade system with rain sensor for the centre pivot window and the solar operated blinds.
Johny Brett, Carpentry Lecturer from Nescot said, “A huge thank you to Jamie from VELUX for spending time with our Carpentry and Joinery students and apprentices. It’s so beneficial for our learners to engage in industry relevant opportunities. The chance for them to get hands-on during the sessions and learn about best practice has been incredibly useful.”
One of the apprentices, Luke who had a go on the roofing training rig, said that the session was really good and a handy refresher.
