Representing Nescot, Iustin and Melissa are all set to compete in the WorldSkills UK National Finals in Greater Manchester this week, from 19 – 22 November. They will be competing in the Culinary Arts category after securing their places in the regional heats which took place in the summer.
We caught up with Iustin and Melissa during one of their practice sessions. They spoke to us about their experience of taking part in the regional qualifiers, their preparation and thoughts on making it to the WorldSkills UK National Finals.
Iustin, who’s currently doing his Level 3 Advanced Professional Cookery Diploma at Nescot said, “Taking part in the WorldSkills UK competition has challenged me and enabled me to showcase my skills and potential. The skills and training I’ve received at Nescot has given me the confidence to take part, the college and tutors have been very supportive.”

From taking part in the regional qualifiers to reaching the finals, it’s been very exciting. More than a competition, it’s an amazing learning opportunity.”
On their preparation, both Iustin and Melissa said that they have been practising to get into the zone. Melissa commented, “We mark each other’s work to perfect our techniques and for encouragement. Our tutors always go the extra mile. The one-to-one support and guidance we have received from our tutor has been invaluable.” They both exclaimed, “We wouldn’t be in the finals without the fantastic support of Karin!”
Karin Freestone, Chef Lecturer at Nescot said, “Both Iustin and Melissa are very talented and have been working hard to get competition ready. Together we’ve been looking at what the competition requires including incorporating good practice such as reducing food waste.
