We are so proud of Nescot apprentice, Amelia Steer, who has been selected as a finalist in the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards 2026. Amelia, who left mainstream school in Year 9, achieved a distinction in her course and has been shortlisted for ‘Apprentice of the Year’ in the prestigious awards. The winner of the category will be announced at an award ceremony next month and we have our fingers crossed for a win! Amelia faced several difficulties during her education, with Covid, dyslexia, health concerns and bullying in school all challenges to overcome. Now happy in college, she has secured her Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification and works at the college nursery, Nestots. The award recognition highlights her kindness, perseverance and growing self- belief, particularly in terms of liaising with parents, who feel their children are safe, secure and supported in her care.
Amelia was nominated by colleagues who felt she had come such a long way from the shy, quiet teenager who first joined the team, growing in confidence every day. She demonstrated strength, motivation, and determination, consistently giving her very best in everything she does.
Julie Kapsalis MBE, CEO and Principal at Nescot said: “Although she always had great potential, Amelia didn’t have a smooth start in education, finding school difficult and leaving mainstream education aged just 14. After starting a course at another college which wasn’t quite right for her, she came to us and we’re so glad she did. The Early Years Educator apprenticeship provides a hands-on learning style where she has been able to get stuck in, develop and excel. She’s a brilliant addition to the Nestots team and a win next month would be so well deserved.”
Amelia Steer, Nursery Practitioner at Nestots said: “I was so nervous when I came into the college but I loved my placement and felt I’d found my calling in nursery nursing. It wasn’t always easy, but I love having fun with the children and having an impact on their lives.
“I’ve helped a little boy with language delays for example, and another child who had hip surgery and needed specific exercises to help his muscles. It’s lovely seeing them thrive. I felt lucky to get offered an apprenticeship at Nestots, and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. I’d love to go back and tell my younger self that everything is going to be OK. She’d be amazed I’m in the running for this award.”
Gemma Spicer, Nursery Manager at Nestots said: “Amelia is an absolute delight to have on the team, bringing fresh ideas, positivity, and enthusiasm into our setting. She fills our days with joy and laughter, and we especially love hearing her singing Disney songs at full volume with the children - moments that perfectly capture the warmth, confidence, and the vibrant energy she brings to us all.”
The Gatwick Diamond Business Awards launched in 2009 and has grown ever since, becoming one of the South East’s most prestigious business awards. ‘Apprentice of the Year’ is one of 16 categories being announced next month. The ceremony takes place on 19th March, at The Grand Hotel, Brighton.
Amelia’s story highlights how apprenticeships enable people aged 16 and over to learn a profession by providing knowledge and skills in the classroom, and gaining practical experience at work.
