Staff and students at Nescot have been participating in a range of activities for Mental Health Awareness Week which takes place during 12-18 May this year.
Activities reflected this year’s theme of celebrating ‘community’ and how it supports our mental health and wellbeing. Staff and students also took part in ‘Wear It Green’ day for Mental Health Awareness Week to show their support and help raise awareness.
A huge thank you to Clare Parish from the charity, The Paul Alan Project for delivering an excellent CPR training session to staff at the start of the week. Staff had the opportunity to learn about the importance of CPR, delivery techniques, find out about defibrillators and how to use them and even take part in practice sessions. Staff found the training amazing and very useful, giving them the confidence to provide informed assistance in critical moments.
During the week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Nekoda Davis OLY, a judo athlete and Commonwealth Gold Medallist from the charity, Mintridge Foundation. A huge thank you to Nekoda for inspiring our students and staff with her presentation on sport, mental health and resilience, and for delivering a judo coaching masterclass.
Nekoda spoke to the Nescot community in the college’s theatre about her extraordinary personal journey as an athlete. Her journey into her adult years and life’s juggles resonated with everyone. She spoke passionately about judo being more than a form of self-defence and how it offers invaluable life skills, self-discipline and confidence. She encouraged students to be the best version of themselves and to take the necessary little steps, work hard and have integrity to reach their destination.
She also spoke about importance of community and its significance for mental health and wellbeing and how her judo community has supported her throughout her journey. She urged students to surround themselves with supportive people who will be able to help them on their journey.
Danielle, Level 3 Public Services student said: “I found Nekoda’s determination to never give up even when she faced injuries and her determination to keep going until she achieved her dream, so inspirational.”
Rhys, Nescot staff member added: “It’s been so interesting and inspiring to hear Nekoda’s perspective on her judo journey, especially as I’m at the start of my judo journey. And seeing how I can maybe follow in the footsteps of someone that’s been successful.”
Nekoda also delivered an incredible judo coaching masterclass to our Level 3 Year 2 Health and Social Care students in the sports hall.
