Nescot’s Level 3 Year 2 Travel and Tourism students recently participated in an informative career day organised by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) STEM programme.
Our students spent an engaging day at the Civil Aviation Authority building at London Gatwick on a bespoke programme that included a range of topics linked to their learning on ‘international airlines’. They started the day learning about the CAA’s Graduate Scheme from a recent graduate who spoke about the types of qualifications and work experience needed for his chosen career path.
They had the chance to listen to topics on, Sustainability in Aviation, Cyber Security in Aviation, Events Management of Piloting and Flying Displays and Investigations and Prosecutions, and take part in a discussion on Aviation Security. They also enjoyed doing the Cyber Challenge and were eager to look at the range of decommissioned items located in security searches and new scanners being introduced at airports.
Jennifer Fasad, Travel and Tourism Lecturer, Nescot said: “A huge thank you to the CAA STEM initiative for inviting our students, and to Brenda Jefcoate and Manali Pallegar for organising such an insightful day. The sessions and materials were current and relevant, offering our learners the latest aviation industry knowledge. Students also experienced a professional boardroom setting, gaining insights into workplace standards. Thanks to Brenda Jefcoate and Manali Pallegar for organising such an insightful day and to Nicole Frimley, Senior AvSec Advisor for Space, Airlines and Airports for facilitating the visit.”
Travel and Tourism student, Jack, found the day particularly enjoyable and useful. Jack who is currently undertaking his pilot training, was assisted with a number of career-based questions during the day.
Brenda Jefcoate, STEM Lead, Civil Aviation Authority said: “The CAA STEM Programme is delighted to support Nescot students through a dedicated career day at the Civil Aviation Authority. We are proud to play a part in inspiring the next generation of aviation professionals by sharing industry insights, showcasing career opportunities, and supporting a deeper understanding of the aviation industry. Encouraging young people to explore the breadth of roles in aviation is at the heart of our STEM objectives, and we were thrilled to engage with such enthusiastic students.”
The CAA STEM programme works nationally with schools and colleges to provide aviation learning opportunities from their CAA STEM volunteer network. There are currently around 230 volunteers who support in delivering a range of topics to students. Find out more on their website here.
