Course Summary

Nescot is pleased to work with the Science Industry Assessment Service in delivering a Level 6 Apprenticeship in Laboratory Scientist (Degree). 

A laboratory scientist applies specialist knowledge and broad scientific understanding to carry out a range of technical and scientific activities in their specialist discipline: Life sciences, biological sciences etc. After completing their BSc degree, apprentice will have an end point assessment to confirm their occupational competence and achievement of the apprenticeship.

The standard entry requirements for the programme are:

  • Students must have achieved a minimum grade C in biology or chemistry (A-level) or MMP (BTEC) or equivalent in a science related subject at level 3. T-Level graduates will also be considered at merit or above.
  • Alternately, students may have undertaken at least 12 months work experience in a relevant science related field (and achieved an equivalent level 3 qualification in any other field).
  • Access to HE Diploma: Applications from Access to Higher Education Diploma candidates for consideration. A typical offer may require you to obtain a proportion of Level 3 credits in relevant science subjects at merit grade or above.

Please note, you will also be required to undertake an initial assessment prior to enrolment in order to assess your current level of English and Maths. Your interviewer will discuss with you the minimum level you will need to achieve.

An employer contribution fee may be applicable depending on the age of the apprentice and the size of your organisation.

The course is made up of 13 modules which make up the programme of study. In the first-year students will study 3 modules. 4 modules in year 2, 3 modules in year and 3 modules in year 4 (Total 13 modules). To get BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Bioscience the student must pass 360 credits. The 5th year will be devoted to Gateway and End Point Assessment (EPA) activities. Achievement of BSc (Hons) degree is a gateway requirement for starting the EPA, along with English and maths at level 2 with grade C/4 or better.

EPA must be completed within a 6-month period. Performance in the EPA will determine the apprentice grade- fail, pass or distinction. The apprentice must pass all EPA methods to successfully complete the apprenticeship.
