Course Summary

Over 2.5 million people are known to have diabetes in the UK with numbers set to rise as obesity levels increase. There are believed to be thousands more who have not yet been diagnosed. This new course has been designed to reach the carers and families of people with diabetes and help them to understand how the condition affects people, how it can be managed, the social issues and more about prevention, complications and care.

Course Detail

This course is designed for the carers and families of people with diabetes as well as health or social care workers who wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of the condition and how it is managed. It has relevance to all types of care settings, including hospices, care homes, care in the community and primary care.

The course will cover the following areas and consists of two modules:

  • Workbook 1: Understand diabetes, Prevention and early Intervention of type 2 diabetes.
  • Workbook 2: Understand the initial care of diabetes, Understand the treatment and management of diabetes.

The course has a credit value of 16 on the Qualifications Credit Framework.

Assessment

Candidates work through the course materials for the programme at times convenient to them, so there is no need to attend the college to gain the qualification. The learning materials contain the knowledge needed to meet the assessment requirements of the course and activities to allow candidates to practice their skills and test their learning. Assessments are based on a combination of knowledge and skills learned on the programme and work-based activities and experience. Learners should aim to complete the course within 12 weeks.
