Three students, each from different courses in our Hair and Beauty department, have qualified for the Worldskills UK national semi-finals, held in Manchester next week.

Rhiannon Spry-Shute is in the second year of her Hair and Media Make-Up course.

“To enter the competition, we had to create a commercial make-up look, on the theme ‘It’s a Wild Life’. I came up with a ‘Flamingo’ look, involving feathers and influenced by ‘drag’ costumes.  I loved working on it. I do my best work when I have a real challenge. Being in the semi final is a bit scary, but I have a new idea which I know is going to be way better!” Rhiannon expects her experience in the competition will be invaluable for her future, as she aims to do a university course in prosthetics before working in the media industry.

Robyn Field, a first year student in Beauty (Level 2), secured her place after impressing judges with her manicure and make-up submission. “I’m really excited, being in the competition gives me a chance to work on something fresh and different,” she said. “The experience will be really useful for me when I go on to the Level 3 course next year.”

Beauty Team Manager Andry Waters said, “We wish all three students the best of luck, but whatever happens taking part in the competition will be an unforgettable part of their time on the course and give them a real head start in their careers. During the pandemic the competitions were cancelled, to finally be able to have our students take part again and showcase their abilities is amazing!”

Nescot offers Hairdressing qualifications at Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, as well as Beauty Therapy at Level 2 and Level 3 and Hair and Media Makeup at Level 2 and Level 3.  For more information about joining one of our courses please click here.
