Course Overview

This qualification provides the ideal introduction to the construction industry and may cover essential skills in the following construction trades: painting and decorating, tiling and carpentry, this may be subject to change.

Entry Requirements

English & Maths: GCSE Grade 9-1 or Entry 3 Functional skills*

*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.

What the course covers

This course is designed to help students to gain practical experience and knowledge which may enable them to progress onto a Level 1 course.

They will gain knowledge and experience in a variety of skills which may include:

  • Painting techniques
  • Tiling
  • Preparing background surfaces and applying render coats
  • Removing and refitting water-filled radiators
  • Introduction to health and safety in construction
  • Introduction to the construction industry
  • Painting and Wallpapering
  • Applying decorative effects

Fees and funding

Please note:

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged course fees
  • Adults may need to pay a fee depending on their personal circumstances. This will be assessed against the relevant Funding Body eligibility criteria at point of enrolment

If you don’t qualify for fee remission, the fees for 2026/27 will be:

£810 (plus registration fee to be advised at enrolment)

Fees are for 2026/27 entry and apply to students eligible for home fee status enrolling to funded programmes. The fees quoted are subject to personal circumstances and will be confirmed at the time of your enrolment, depending on eligibility criteria.     Essential Personal Protective Equipment
    Students are required to provide steel toe-capped boots and overalls for practical work : approximately £51.

    Progression

    The expectation is for learners to progress onto a Level 1 course within Construction such as:

    • NOCN Level 1 Diploma in Multi Skills
    • NOCN Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery
    • NOCN Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying
