SAFEGUARDING & WELLBEING
We offer a range of support in order to help you achieve your full personal and academic potential. Our Safeguarding & Wellbeing team are here to help, guide and support your Nescot experience.
Nescot College recognise our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk of harm in our care. We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where students are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and the Safeguarding Policy and Procedures incorporate a wide range of risks we need to safeguard against. This includes the prevention of radicalisation which is listed as a specific safeguarding issue and is addressed in the Government PREVENT strategy.
Expert support
As a student at Nescot College, you will have access to wide-ranging expert support, from specialised help with student finance to professional support for personal, social or family problems. All these services are available to you free of charge and are easily accessed on campus through your tutor.
While we do our best to ensure every student is enrolled on the right course to meet their needs and goals, we know that for many reasons life can sometimes become complicated and difficult. We are here for you if you are upset, confused or struggling with a problem and feel it would be beneficial to discuss any issues with someone outside of your circle of friends and family.
What is safeguarding?
This College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
This means that we have a Safeguarding Policy and a procedure in place. All staff must ensure that they are aware of these procedures. Students, parents and carers are welcome to read the policies or contact us if you have any further questions.
Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a young person’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our learners are discussed with them and their parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the young person’s welfare.
Safeguarding includes a wide range of issues such as:
- Abuse – physical, sexual, emotional and neglect
- Criminal exploitation/county lines
- Domestic abuse
- Drug and alcohol misuse
- Sexual exploitation
- Female genital mutilation
- Forced marriage
- Homelessness/missing from home
- Honour-based violence
- Mental health
- Online safety
- Peer-on-peer abuse
- Radicalisation and extremism
- Self-harm
- Youth-produced sexual imagery

Security
While we take safety and security on the campus very seriously indeed we do not believe in using intimidating security devices at the college.
Our security staff maintain a highly-visible, friendly presence around the campus and work on a sociable, first-name basis with the students. Security are here primarily to protect everyone at Nescot and to ensure there is a swift resolution to any situation where students and staff feel there is a threat to their person or property.
The work of the security team means we are a friendly campus, where students can come and go without obtrusive security checks. A single entrance to the campus ensures that students can enjoy Nescot’s extensive grounds in a safe, secure environment.
Smoking & vaping
Nescot is proud to be a smoke and vape-free campus. This initiative supports Nescot’s on-going commitment to promoting a healthier, cleaner, supportive and more sustainable environment for everyone.
The introduction of Nescot’s Smoke and Vape-free policy follows on after careful consideration of feedback received from our staff and student consultation in March-April 2025, and in line with the introduction of the Government’s single-use vapes ban legislation (effective from 1 June 2025), and the Tobacco and Vapes Bill designed to create a ‘smoke-free’ generation.
Key changes from 1 August 2025
- All smoking and vaping shelters on the inner campus have been removed. The dome (at the rear of the Refectory) is a no smoking and vaping area.
- A new covered smoking and vaping area for staff, students and visitors Is located in the college car park, outside the main campus.

FAQs
The policy is being implemented to align with legislative changes, promote health and wellbeing, to reduce environmental impact and following on from feedback received from consultation feedback:
Legislative Changes: Recent legislative updates require us to align our campus policies with new public health regulations. This change ensures that we are not only supporting the objective of creating a ‘smoke-free generation’ but recognising that it is illegal for under 18s to purchase or be supplied cigarettes, vapes or other tobacco products.
Health and Wellbeing: The health and wellbeing of our campus community is our top priority. Smoking is a leading cause of preventable diseases and health issues. By creating a smoke and vape-free environment, we aim to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the risks associated with smoking.
Environmental Impact: Smoking and vaping not only affects personal health but also has a significant environmental impact. Cigarette butts and discarded vapes are a major source of litter and pollution. A smoke and vape-free campus will contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment for everyone.
Consultation Feedback: This decision has been made following extensive consultation with staff, students and other stakeholders. We have carefully considered the feedback received and believe that this policy will benefit our entire community.
The policy came into effect on August 1, 2025.
The policy applies to all areas of the college campus, including buildings and outdoor spaces. A designated smoking and vaping area has been created in the main college car park.
The entire campus is designated as smoke and vape-free. A designated smoking and vaping area has been created in the main college car park. Please view our campus map for precise location here.
No, smoking and vaping is not permitted in vehicles while on private campus property. It is also illegal to smoke in a vehicle carrying anyone under the age of 18.
