Course Overview

The Level 1 Diploma in Creative Industry will help you develop the media skills and techniques that are required in industry. The course has been designed so that you will create cross-disciplinary projects across media that will prepare you to progress onto a Level 2 course.


Entry Requirements

New Students

4 GCSE’S at Grade 2*. It is not required to have studied media before.

*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.

Progressing Students

For progressing students, a good reference for attitude, behaviour, attendance and punctuality is essential.


What the course covers

On this UAL Level 1 Creative Industries course, you will develop foundational skills in:

  • Stop Motion Animation : Learning how to create frame-by-frame animated sequences.
  • Camera Skills : Understanding the basics of camera operation and composition.
  • Editing Skills : Developing techniques to edit video and audio effectively.
  • Podcasting : Exploring how to plan, record, and produce engaging audio content.
  • Studio Sessions : Gaining hands-on experience in a professional studio environment.
  • Writing Skills : Strengthening creative and technical writing for media projects.

Throughout the course, you will also develop essential communication, literacy, and numeracy skills, which are crucial for success in the creative industries.

Teaching and Industry Experience

At Nescot, our tutors have extensive industry experience, ensuring that your learning is practical, relevant, and industry-focused. Guest speakers from creative sectors, including filmmakers, editors, and producers, will provide valuable insight into real-world career pathways.

Other trips include exhibitions and film screenings throughout November.

Student Success and Progression

We encourage students to take part in competitions and work experience to develop their skills and confidence. Many students progress to the UAL Level 2 Creative Media course at NESCOT or further education in creative subjects at top institutions.

Assessment

Your progress will be assessed through coursework, with grades awarded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

You will be graded Pass or Fail for Units 1-7, with the final grade coming from Unit 8 which is the Final Major Project.

Work Experience

As part of this course, you will complete up to two weeks of work experience, with an external based client within the college that simulates industry work. You will receive support in finding a suitable placement.

Fees and funding

Please note:

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged course fees
  • Adults may need to pay a fee depending on their personal circumstances. This will be assessed against the relevant Funding Body eligibility criteria at point of enrolment

If you don’t qualify for fee remission, the fees for 2026/27 will be:

£1,260 (plus registration fee to be advised at enrolment)

Fees are for 2026/27 entry and apply to students eligible for home fee status enrolling to funded programmes. The fees quoted are subject to personal circumstances and will be confirmed at the time of your enrolment, depending on eligibility criteria.
