What the course covers

Who is the course suitable for?

This course has been designed to provide an entry point for those wishing to start a career in the Building Services Engineering sector in electrotechnical technology or gain a Level 1 qualification in Electrical Installation. Learners will need to have an interest in general Building Services Engineering procedures and processes, with a keen enthusiasm towards learning basic electrotechnical theory and practice.

This qualification does not demonstrate competence to be a qualified electrician but will support the learner’s progression to further study.

What will I learn?

The qualification covers the key aspects of working within the Building Services industry to include a range of practical tasks and the underpinning knowledge for electrical installation work.

Units:

  • Structure of the construction industry
  • Fundamental safe working practices
  • Environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings
  • Site preparation for working in the construction industry
  • Electrical installation wiring and terminations
  • Fabrication techniques for electrical installation
  • Electrical science and technology

Learners will have the opportunity to acquire Level 2 Functional Skills or G.C.S.E.s in Maths and/or English. These will be required for progression to higher academic qualifications.

The use of Information Technology will be promoted throughout the study programme along with the skills required for employability and personal development.

Fees and funding

Please note:

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged course fees
  • Adults may need to pay a fee depending on their personal circumstances. This will be assessed against the relevant Funding Body eligibility criteria at point of enrolment

If you don’t qualify for fee remission, the fees for 2026/27 will be:

£1,248 (plus registration fee to be advised at enrolment)

Progression

On successful completion of this course, learners may wish to progress on to the following electrotechnical qualifications, subject to meeting the entry requirements:

– Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation [Buildings and Structures].

– Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment [Buildings, Structures and the Environment] work based apprenticeship programme.
