Course Overview

This work-related programme will cover the basic knowledge and technical skills that you will need to progress to a more advanced course or to gain employment within the animal care industry. These skills include animal behaviour, welfare and handling. You will also undertake work experience, which will be assessed as part of your programme.

Entry Requirements

New Students

GCSE 3/4 grade profile in maths and English as well as GCSE Science grade 3*.

Progressing Students

Students progressing from Level One to L2 Technical: Progression to the one-year Level Two Technical in Animal Care requires that the individual has achieved achieved at least a Merit and ideally a Distinction in their Level One in Landbased [Animal Care] course and a Pass in their Award in Employability course. They should ideally have achieved at least L1 FS in English and maths.

Students Progressing from the L1.5 to the L2 Technical: Those students seeking to progress onto the one-year Level Two Technical Certificate in Animal Care from the Animal Studies Progression Diploma will be required to have achieved at least a Distinction in their Level One units [Term One] and achieved at least a Merit in the L2 components of the course. Award in Landbased Studies [Terms Two and Three]. They will also be required to have achieved at least a Functional Skills Level 1/GCSE grade 3 in maths and in English.

What the course covers

This course forms part of a programme of study which will be tailored individually to boost your employability in the animal industry and which will include Maths and English as necessary.

The course is made up of a number of different units, which cover:

  • Animal Accommodation
  • Feeding
  • Handling
  • Behaviour
  • Health Care
  • Roles and Responsibilities of working within the animal industry

Units are delivered through the use of taught sessions, online packages, and practical work on the Nescot Animal Care Unit, with a range of companion, exotic, and farm livestock species.

Units are assessed using a mix of controlled assessments, project tasks, and a synoptic exam at the end of your course. All three of these elements need to be graded at a minimum of Pass for you to successfully complete the course. All students must also complete a period of work experience to fulfil the requirements of City and Guilds.

The students will partake in a range of both practical and theory sessions across the week. As part of their study programme, students will also complete blended learning tasks to encourage learners independence in work completion. As part of this course you will be required to attend external work placement for a total of 75 hours over the duration of your course, the awarding body determines the number of hours required to pass this qualification. Students will also partake in animal duties on the animal care unit where they will gain a minimum of 75 hours of internal experience.

Progression

This course will prepare you for more advanced study and training. A merit overall is required for the one year level 3 programme or distinction overall for the two year level 3 programme, subject to tutor reference. Some students choose to go into full-time animal work in a variety of establishments including farm parks, kennels, zoos, veterinary hospitals and dog groomers.
