Course Overview

This qualification is ideal for practising or potential team leaders. It will support the development of skills in leading a team to ensure that the team’s work achieves organisational objectives.

Entry Requirements

You do not need to have any formal qualifications in order to follow this course, but you will need to demonstrate commitment and motivation to work through the specially prepared distance-learning materials.

What the course covers

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the roles and functions of a team leader. The programme will help students to develop the skills they need to support effective teamwork, deal with challenges within a team, and maintain a harmonious working environment. Team working is fundamental to the success of any organisation. As well as providing students with a nationally recognised qualification, this course will introduce them to the key areas concerned with effective team leading, such as supporting the development of team members; objective setting, communication and motivation; and maintaining the health, safety and security of themselves and their team. In addition, students will be able to increase their knowledge and understanding of procurement, customer service and information management. They will also look at topics surrounding equality and diversity and related legislation.

Candidates work through the course materials for the programme at times convenient to them, so there is no need to attend the college to gain the qualification.

The course will cover the following areas and consists of two modules and units:

  • Workbook 1: Principles of team leading, Understand business, Understand how to communicate work-related information.
  • Workbook 2: Understand customers.
  • Workbook 3: Understand how to develop working relationships with colleagues.
  • Workbook 4: Understand health and safety procedures in the workplace.
  • Workbook 5: Introduction to Coaching.
  • Workbook 6: Understand personal development.

Fees and funding

Most people are eligible to access our Distance Learning courses for free, the criteria below outline the requirements for free study.

You must:

  • Be aged 19 years or above as of 1 August of the current academic year.
  • Have lived in the UK, EU, EEA for the past 3 years, for purposes other than study.
  • Not currently be enrolled on an Apprenticeship.
  • Live in England, in a funded postal code within Surrey, GLA or a non-devolved area.

Progression

The programme will enable candidates to further their own continuous professional development, which may improve their career prospects: or candidates could progress on to further specialist qualifications related to the context in which they work or the possibility of an apprenticeship in a related area.
