This full-time course offers learners the opportunity to acquire at advanced level the theory and practical skills involved in the Building Services Engineering industry for electrical installation procedures and practices.This qualification will be recognised in industry and could lead to meaningful employment in the electrotechnical industry.
Entry Requirements
Progressing Students:
GCSE Grade 4 in both maths and English, plus valid Level 2 Electrical qualification.
You will be asked to attend a remote conversation with a member of the Electrical Team by telephone or video link prior to enrolment to check you are on track to meet the entry criteria.
Priority will be given to existing students at main enrolment.
What the course covers
Who is the qualification for?
This course has been designed to provide progression for those wishing to start a career in the Building Services Engineering sector in electrotechnical technology or gain a Level 3 qualification in Electrical Installation.
Learners will need to have an interest in Building Services Engineering procedures and processes, with a keen enthusiasm towards learning electrotechnical regulations, principles of electrical science, commissioning and fault diagnosis and rectification.
This qualification does not demonstrate competence to be a qualified electrician but will support the learner’s progression to further study.
What will I learn?
The qualification covers the key aspects of working within the Building Services industry to include the underpinning knowledge and practical skills for electrical installation work.
Units:
- Planning and overseeing electrical work activities
- Principles of electrical science
- Electrical design and installation practices and procedures
- Principles of inspection, testing and commissioning electrical systems
- Inspecting, testing and commissioning electrical systems
- Electrical system fault diagnosis and rectification
- Requirements for electrical installations
Employer and industry engagement are a mandatory component of this qualification and will support understanding the expectations of the electrotechnical technology industry. Activities include industry placements, assignments provided by industry specialists and visits to or from industry suppliers and organisations.
A work placement is part of this course, you are required to undertake an Industry Placement of 315 hours with an external employer relevant to the course you are studying. You will be encouraged to source your own placement with support from the work placement team and your tutor. Work placements often lead onto offer of an apprenticeship or paid employment once you have completed your course.
How is my course assessed?
The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Electrical Installation is assessed through a theory exam, an assignment consisting of knowledge and practical skills, and an industry engagement portfolio.

- Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not charged for course fees

Where will this qualification lead to?
On successful completion of this course, learners may wish to progress on to the following electrotechnical qualifications:
- Level 3 NVQ Electrotechnical Technology work based apprenticeship programme.
