Course Overview
This course prepares you for a variety of careers in health and social care, for example, Nursing, Social Work, Probation, Youth Work, Radiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. You will study a range of subjects including equality, diversity and rights in health and social care, first aid, human physiology, and effective communication. You will also attend work placements in different settings for 300 hours.
Entry Requirements
New Students
Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, Maths and preferably a Science.*
Progressing Students
Progressing students require a Level 2 Diploma at Merit or a C grade equivalent, GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade 4, plus a good reference and excellent attendance.
Please note, all applicants will be asked to apply for an Enhanced DBS check before starting the course.
*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.
What the course covers
18 units over 2 years.
Core units:
- Communication in health and social care
- Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
- Development through the life stages
- Personal and professional development in health and social care (includes work experience)
- Anatomy and physiology
- Sociology
- Psychology
Specialist units which may include:
- Nutrition for health and social care
- Research project
- Complementary therapies
- Infection prevention control
- Mental health and wellbeing
The course forms the main vocational element in your individual programme of study which will also include an opportunity to improve your GCSEs in English and Maths if you do not already have these. Work experience in a health care or early years setting is an essential part of the course.
As part of this course you will be required to attend an external work placement for total of 200 hours over the duration of your course, the awarding body determines the number of hours required to pass this qualification.
Fees and funding
Please note:
- Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged for course fees

All applicants will be asked to apply for an Enhanced DBS check before starting the course. The cost of this is £52.
Progression
If you are successful on this course you may progress to Higher Education, professional training or directly into a range of occupations in health and social care.
