The Creative Media Department

Media industries are expanding at an exponential rate. The term ‘media convergence’ refers to how both old media and new media are merging to produce new products and processes. In order to meet the demand for new and evolving employment opportunities, graduates are expected to be able to display a range of relevant transferable skills.

Your Education

Our HNC/HND Creative Media course has been designed to reflect industry, and as such, you will develop your creative, technical and organisational skills across a number of media sectors. Using industry-standard software and equipment, working individually and in teams, you will complete a diverse range of projects developed to mould you into a highly-employable, modern, media professional.

Our Facilities

The facilities that will be available to you during your studies will be second to none. Apple is synonymous with all things creative and the Nescot media department is currently kitted out with seven Apple Mac suites, and four high-end PC labs. We have a top of the range Black Magic TV Studio, a Games Hub, Screening Room and designated art space. We also have a designated HE break out zone.

Our labs are kitted out with software such as the Adobe Suite, Substance Painter, Z Brush, Autodesk and Maya. As a Creative Media student, you will shoot on 4k cameras, supported by a selection of professional kit, including cranes, dollies, etc.

Our Staff

A team of experienced industry professionals will support you through your studies. Their collective experience spans a range of industries including film, TV, games, VFX and journalism. From TV to sports producers, independent gaming and the VFX industry, their experience is integrated into the classroom and the lessons that they teach.

Progression

On successful completion of the HND you may wish to study a ‘top up’ year at University in order to convert the qualification to a full degree, and your course tutor will support you through the application process.

Next Steps

If this kind of course appeals to you the next step is to apply. You will be invited in for an informal interview with our friendly tutors. At this interview we are not necessarily looking for outstanding academic ability: it is much more important to have a genuine passion for the subject, pride in what you do and a desire to succeed.

The best thing about the course is how practical it is. We work on really interesting projects, and we’re treated like we’re already working in the industry. In Level 3 we learnt a lot of practical skills, like how to frame or light a shot, and how to edit, and then we worked in teams on different productions.

The HND is a good mix of practical and theory, and you’re given a lot of responsibility and autonomy. There’s a big jump from high school to college, and another jump from Level 3 to HND, but you’re supported throughout. I’ve set up my own media production business and I already have clients. The HND is giving me the technical and practical skills I need to make it a success.
