Entry Requirements

New Students

Two GCSEs at grade 2, preferably including English and Maths, or Functional Skills at E3 in Maths and English*.

*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.

What the course covers

The course gives you the chance to find out if this type of career is enjoyable and learn vital skills that can help you progress to a Level 2 course or take work in the industries. You will study a mixture of practical and theory units on this course that will give you a good insight into the Sport and Fitness industries and the knowledge you will require to work in these types of organisations. Assessment is 100% coursework based as you will follow a study programme aimed at helping you improve your literacy and numeracy skills.

The course is made up of 10 units:

  • Assisting in Sports Activity
  • Keeping Active and Healthy
  • Getting People Active
  • How Exercise Affects the Body
  • Training for Fitness
  • Playing Sport
  • Researching a Topic

Work Experience is a part of this course, the hours and dates will be determined by the course tutor. Work experience can be up to a maximum of two weeks on an external placement, you are encouraged to source your own placement with support from the WEX Team and your course tutor. Where external placements are not possible you will be expected to take part in simulated work experience organised by the college.

Fees and funding

You will be provided with all the resources and materials needed for your programme. However, we have found in the past that learners purchase additional items and by buying in bulk we can gain a good discount. Therefore additional material fees are expected to be paid at enrolment to cover the following:

  • Polo Shirt
  • Trip

Please note:

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged course fees
  • Adults may need to pay a fee depending on their personal circumstances. This will be assessed against the relevant Funding Body eligibility criteria at point of enrolment

If you don’t qualify for fee remission, the fees for 2026/27 will be:

£1,080 (plus registration fee to be advised at enrolment)

Fees are for 2026/27 entry and apply to students eligible for home fee status enrolling to funded programmes. The fees quoted are subject to personal circumstances and will be confirmed at the time of your enrolment, depending on eligibility criteria. Progression

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress into a range of jobs in the sports industry. Students who achieve a merit in this course have the opportunity to progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Sport.
