The full time Foundation Diploma in Sport course at Nescot is a one year course aimed at students with an interest in the application of sports coaching and health and fitness to the promotion, maintenance and enhancement of sport related performance.

Entry Requirements

New students

You will require 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English or Maths*.

*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.

Progressing Students

A Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport at Distinction with all exams passed and a GCSE in English or Maths at grade 4 or above. A good reference from your tutor is also required for attitude, behaviour, attendance above 85% and punctuality.

What the course covers

Students will undertake a combination of sports related units including sports coaching, instructing physical activity and sports massage as well as studying sports injuries. These units will be combined with fitness testing, fitness for training and other sports related subjects. Learning will take place through lectures, group work, debates, group discussions and practical sports sessions.

The course contains a mixture of theoretical lessons in classrooms and the sports therapy clinic and practical sessions in the sports hall, fitness centre, college sports fields and local sports centres.

The units are selected from the list below and staff aim to ensure they maximise students chances of either gaining employment in the health and fitness industry in the future or progressing to University to typically study sports studies, sports coaching, sports therapy on other related degrees.

Subject to interest, students will have the opportunity to complete a host of additional qualifications during the two-year course, including CYQ Certificate in Fitness Instructing and other industry led courses.

Work Experience is a part of this course, the hours and dates will be determined by the course tutor. Work experience can be up to a maximum of two weeks on an external placement, you are encouraged to source your own placement with support from your course tutor. Where external placements are not possible you will be expected to take part in simulated work experience organised by the college.

Fees and funding

Please note:

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged course fees.

You will be provided with all the basic resources and materials needed for your programme. Some additional fees are required to cover the cost of trips made to outdoor activity centres and activities required to take place to gain criteria to pass this course.

You will have to pay for the following:
‚ Skern Lodge Outdoor Activity Centre : residential trip – £270
‚ Sports department polo shirt- £10
‚ Books – approximately £30

Progression

Progression to the 1 year L3 Extended Diploma in Sport.
This would enable university entrance to study sports science, sports therapy/rehabilitation or other sports science related subjects.

Various roles in the health and fitness industry, such as gym instructor, personal trainer, leisure attendant or sports coach.

University entrance to study sports studies, sports coaching, sports therapy on other related degrees.
