This course will develop students’ skills in hair and media make-up and successful completion will allow progression on to the Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-Up.
Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English at grade 3*.
*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.
What the course covers
The units you will study include:
Principles of working in the make-up industry
Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists
Principles of researching, developing and showcasing designs
The art of applying make-up
Hair artistry
Creative make-up artistry
You will be assessed through a final external written exam and a practical exam.
Work experience is part of the course and will be approximately 40 hours over the academic year. Work experience is a mandatory part of your course and as such students may be expected to work some weekends and/or evenings to fulfil this.
Fees and funding
Please note:
Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not normally charged course fees
Adults may need to pay a fee depending on their personal circumstances. This will be assessed against the relevant Funding Body eligibility criteria at point of enrolment
If you don’t qualify for fee remission, the fees for 2026/27 will be:
£1,350 (plus registration fee to be advised at enrolment)
Fees are for 2026/27 entry and apply to students eligible for home fee status enrolling to funded programmes. The fees quoted are subject to personal circumstances and will be confirmed at the time of your enrolment, depending on eligibility criteria. Students will be required to buy a uniform, and a make-up and hairdressing kit, which costs approximately £450.
Progression
Successful completion will allow progression on to the Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make up.

Your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace.
This Level 3 course is a progression on from Level 2 Hairdressing whereby learners study the underlying principles and advanced hairdressing practical skills required in hairdressing industry.
This course introduces you to a mixture of hair and beauty units to give you the breadth of the industry that you are entering. The course will incorporate Level 2 skills in to the practical sessions in order to stretch your skills in preparation for Level 2.
At Level 3 you will work on your creativity and confidence in order to deliver varied and advanced hairdressing techniques such as creative colouring, creative cutting and colour correction, in collaboration with Toni&Guy. You will work on real life clients, in both our training salons and in our commercial salon, Innovation, to put your new skills into action as you learn them.
