Course Overview

This course will help you to develop a range of practical hairdressing skills that are required in a hairdressing salon. You will learn fundamental hairdressing techniques such as cutting, colouring, styling and shampooing.

Entry Requirements

New Students

Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English at grade 3 and successful completion of pre-interview written task*. You will also be interviewed in the spring term by a member of the Hairdressing Team.

*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.

Progressing Students

Successful completion of the Level 1 programme in Hair with the majority of grades at Merit or above plus English, together with a satisfactory reference from your tutor for attitude, behaviour, attendance and punctuality.

What the course covers

Nescot’s Hair & Beauty Academy has been through some exciting recent changes. We have completely refurbished the training salons and theory room and are now delighted to have a state of the art, commercial salon in partnership with Toni & Guy on site. All of our team are excellent teachers as well as senior-level hairdressers and beauty therapists with outstanding industry experience.

You will gain a basic insight into the world of colour, learning about the colour star and how to formulate the L’Or?©al product range to get the results the client is looking for. You will learn how to carry out a full consultation in order to identify a client’s requirements and you will be able to make recommendations for products and future services.

You will work on real clients within commercial time frames. You will be expected to show the communication skills and behaviour that would be expected in the salon (employability skills).

  • Consultation
  • Health and safety
  • Shampooing
  • Promoting products
  • Cutting women’s and men’s hair
  • Colouring and lightening hair
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Working in the industry

Timetable and assessment

  • You will be continually assessed on your practical and written work.
  • Theory lessons where you will prepare for your exams.
  • Practical lessons where observations will be carried out.
  • A work placement to gain industry knowledge
  • Weekly tutorial support to continue to develop your employability skills
  • English and maths lessons if you have not achieved a 4 at GCSE, which are a compulsory element in achieving your diploma.

Work Experience is a part of this course, the hours and dates will be determined by the course tutor. Work experience can be up to a maximum of two weeks on an external placement, you are encouraged to source your own placement with support from the WEX Team and your course tutor. Where external placements are not possible you will be expected to take part in simulated work experience organised by the college.

  • Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not charged course fees.

Progression

Successful students at Level 2 can progress to work as a junior stylist in a salon, or to VRQ Level 3 in Hairdressing.
