FOUNDATION LEARNING

At Nescot’s Foundation Learning department, you can access a wide range of qualifications designed to help you achieve your full potential. Some programmes are tailored to support you if you have learning difficulties or disabilities, while others are designed for you if you left school with few or no formal qualifications.

Learning pathways

Our focus is to prepare you for life after college and to improve your future opportunities and choices. We have developed a curriculum that gives you a clear pathway through the department, helping you progress into further education, employment, or supported living. You will be assessed to make sure you join the right pathway at the right level, so you can build your skills and continue to progress with confidence.

Supporting your studies

Our experienced teaching staff are dedicated to supporting you throughout your journey at Nescot. With tailored support, you will be helped to build your confidence, develop key skills, and progress at your own pace. The team will guide you every step of the way, helping you gain the knowledge and independence you need to move on to further education, employment, or supported living.

Great facilities

We have invested significantly in our specialist learning environment over the last few years. As a Foundation Learning student, you will have access to your own dedicated area within the main college, known as The Hub. This allows you to transition at your own pace—from a quieter, more supported space to using shared areas of the campus, such as the refectory and library. You will also be supported during unstructured times, with Learning Support Break-Time Monitors available across the campus to help you feel confident and independent.

Our staff

You will be supported by a dedicated team of tutors who are experienced in working with young people with learning difficulties or disabilities. You can also expect:

  • Learning support assistants in every lesson
  • Student mentors to help you with social difficulties
  • A college nurse to support your medical needs
  • A student experience officer to help you with attendance and enrichment activities,

Course highlights

  • Students on all pathways will study English and maths at an appropriate level until they reach Level 2 or GCSE Grade 4.
  • Alongside your lessons you’ll have lots of opportunities to try our new things like singing, film, art and book clubs, plus lots of sports and dance activities.

My course involved studying customer service, hospitality and catering. I particularly enjoyed cooking and being with my friends. The teaching is very good, and my tutors are really understanding and supportive. A highlight for me was getting the chance to do work experience at the British Heart Foundation, which gave me lots of confidence like learning how to get the bus. I’m excited to continue my learning journey at Nescot.
