Course Overview
This course enables students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that enable progression within specific areas of employment such as exercise and fitness, leadership support and sports coaching.
Entry Requirements
New Students
Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English*.
*The College reserves the right to ask for a school reference if required.
Progressing Students
A level 1 Diploma (with minimum grade Merit Merit) plus GCSE English at grade 3 or above or Functional Skills English at Level 1, plus a good reference from your current tutor for attitude, behaviour, attendance above 85% and punctuality.
What the course covers
Our course is structured to ensure a mixture of theory and practical units. You may have the option to take additional qualifications in first aid and coaching to aid future employment opportunities and career progression in the fitness and sports coaching industries.
This course is aimed at students with an interest in sport and who want to gain a qualification to enter employment within the sport or the fitness industries or progress onto a Sports Fitness or Sports Science course.
Students completing these qualifications may seek employment within the sport sector at a junior level in a range of roles including recreation assistant or sports leader/sports coaches. The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport provides opportunities for learners to focus on the development of personal, learning and thinking skills, functional skills, and wider skills in a sport context, such as environmental issues and health and safety considerations.
The course is made up of 12 units which include:

- Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance
and the following units:
- Practical Sports Performance
- The Mind and Sports Performance
- The Sports Performer in Action
- Training for Personal Fitness
- Leading Sports Activities
- Lifestyle and Wellbeing
- Injury and the Sports Performer
- Running a Sports Event
- The Sport and Active Leisure Industry
- Profiling Sports Performance
Work Experience is a part of this course, the hours and dates will be determined by the course tutor. Work experience can be up to a maximum of two weeks on an external placement, you are encouraged to source your own placement with support from the WEX Team and your course tutor. Where external placements are not possible you will be expected to take part in simulated work experience organised by the college.
Fees and funding
Please note:
- Students aged 16 to 18, or those aged 16 to 24 who have a valid EHCP, and are studying Further Education courses are not charged course fees.

You will be provided with all the basic resources and materials needed for your programme. Some additional fees are required to cover costs of trips and activities required to take place to gain criteria to pass this course.

Duration
