Our next Open Evening is on Thursday 15 May.

Nescot's Art and Digital Design students’ artwork is on display at Epsom Station as part of Art @the Station, a national initiative by The Arts Society to showcase work by budding artists in station waiting rooms and public walkways.

The project was commissioned by The Arts Society Epsom and funded by Southern’s parent company, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR). The students’ designs, which were on display at Bourne Hall in Ewell over the summer, were unveiled and installed at Epsom Station this week (09/10/24).

The team of 11 Art and Digital Design Level 3 students from Nescot produced 12 portrait artworks for the covered walkway at Epsom Station. Their work is based on the theme, ‘Sense of Place – Epsom’, using bold silhouettes and bright colours featuring iconic landmarks of Epsom – The Clock Tower, Market Place, Assembly Rooms, Epsom Downs Racecourse, The Regiment of Trees.

One of the students, George said, “We did a lot of research on the history of Epsom which was very interesting. Working on the project has been a good opportunity and great for my portfolio. It’s amazing to see my artwork displayed publicly.”

Another student, Alife commented, “I found the project fun and enjoyable. We took a variety of photographs of Epsom’s historic landmarks to create our artwork designs. It was a shock and a wonderful sense of achievement to see my artwork on display at Epsom Station.”

Angie Child from The Arts Society Epsom who was the project manager said, “I am delighted with the outcome of the wonderful images Nescot students have created for Epsom Station which fulfilled the brief and much more. Even when we were putting the artwork on display passengers hurrying by stopped to admire and take pictures of the beautiful colourful artwork.”

Miles Merritt, from Nescot's Creative Arts team said, “As part of their work experience last term, our students were commissioned to create 12 pieces of digital artwork featuring landmarks from Epsom to reflect the local community. They worked well together, staying on task and meeting deadlines. The artwork displayed at Epsom station highlights their creativity, talent and hard work. This project has given our students valuable hands-on experience, thanks to The Arts Society Epsom and Southern for their support. We look forward to working on future community projects.”

Rob Whitehead, GTR’s Community Engagement Manager worked closely with Nescot students and gave them free rail tickets to and from London so they can see an art exhibition. He said: “We’re delighted to help here in Epsom and highlight the talented work of the students at Nescot. We supported this work through our Station Partners Small Grant fund which is available to groups to bring about the wonderful work that we have seen through this partnership.”

Angie Child from The Arts Society Epsom added, “Thanks to Miles Merritt from Nescot who inspired and encouraged the students to participate in this initiative which was an add-on to their coursework and to Linda Bristow, ex-Chair of The Arts Society Epsom who worked with me to make this happen. We look forward to working with Nescot students again for Art @the Station in 2025 for a display at Ewell East.”

The Arts Society Epsom is a member of The Arts Society, a leading arts education charity with a global network of local Societies which bring people together through a shared curiosity for the arts. Art @the Station was conceived by The Arts Society and has developed to comprise a rolling series of Art from young artists in the public space of a station’s Waiting Room, Ticket Hall or Platform, giving the students a rare chance to have their work displayed within a ‘real exhibition’, publicly. This not only enhances the station environment but gives passengers a greater experience of Art in Society.
